The catalytic converter is the component that plays a critical role in managing exhaust emissions in BMW vehicles, as well as in many modern automobiles. Its primary function is to convert harmful pollutants in the exhaust gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, into less harmful substances before they are released into the atmosphere.

This conversion is achieved through chemical reactions facilitated by catalysts within the converter, typically consisting of precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The catalytic converter works effectively at high temperatures, which is essential for optimizing the reduction of harmful emissions as the vehicle is operating.

The oxygen sensor can also influence emissions by monitoring the level of oxygen in the exhaust gases and adjusting the air-fuel mixture accordingly to improve combustion efficiency, but it does not directly convert harmful emissions. The exhaust manifold directs exhaust gases from the engine to the exhaust system, and while the turbocharger improves engine performance by forcing more air into the combustion chamber, it does not have a role in managing or reducing emissions.
